If you're a budget traveler, booking a hotel accommodation in Singapore and visiting the city-state's remarkable attractions is not something you must avoid. This is true even if it was named one of the world's most expensive cities.

In fact, according to the 2014 Worldwide Cost of Living survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit, which compared over 400 price indicators to rank 131 cities worldwide, Singapore is the most upscale place on earth, overtaking Tokyo.

The result of this survey shouldn't entirely discourage those like you who are traveling on a tight budget, because you can still enjoy Singapore without having to shell out too much money. You can do this by trying the most affordable activities on our list.

1. Visit a public water park.
As answer to the problem of sweltering weather in the city, the Singapore Sports Council has created a network of swimming facilities, allowing locals and tourists to easily cool off. The best thing is that they require very minimal entrance fees of around SGD 2.00. Among the city's 25 water parks is the Sengkang Swimming Complex, which offers 1 competition pool and 1 wading pool.

2. Find cheap but yummy eats.
Visiting a local hawker center is the best way to get as much food for the smallest possible price. A hawker center is basically a place to grab glorified street food. It is an open-air complex, where you will find dirt-cheap cooked food, and can also be found in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Riau Islands. The top hawker centers in Singapore are Maxwell Road, Newton Circus, Smith Street, Old Airport Road, and Lau Pa Sat.

3. Enjoy a free light show.
Gracing the city skyline twice every night, and 3 times nightly on weekends, the Wonder Full light show is a crowd-magnet played by the Marina Bay Sands Casino at Resorts World Sentosa. It runs for 13 minutes and showcases dancing lights, graphic projections, and water jets that dance to the music composed by local Iskandar Ismail and recorded by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra. One of the best spots from which to view this free-for-all spectacle is the pedestrian-only Helix Bridge.

4. Appreciate art for free.
A free-entry museum is also one thing to not miss when in the metropolis. We're talking about Singapore Art Museum (SAM) along Bras Basah Road, the sole museum in the city that does not require an admission fee every Friday from 6 pm to 9 pm. If you want to view SAM's extensive collection of contemporary Asian art outside the free-entry hours, you only have to pay SGD10 for adults and SGD5 for foreign students and senior citizens. Meanwhile, citizens, permanent residents, and children below 6 can always enter the facility without charge.

5. Stay at Marrison @ Desker
Taking pride in being one of the most affordable family-friendly hotels in the city, Marrison @ Desker offers a no-frills accommodation that features a clean, contemporary interior design and amenities that cover basic travel needs. Each of its living spaces, mostly family rooms, feature a flat-screen cable TV, phone, and free Wi-Fi Internet connection. And since it is conveniently located at the heart of Little India, this accommodation in Singapore also affords easy access to key points of interest, such as the Mustafa Centre and City Square Mall.
