Even if pad thai restaurants outside Thailand promise authentic Thai dining, they can't compare to eateries typically outside a Bangkok hotel in Sukhumvit. The authentic food served along the streets is so good, it's worth a trip on its own. And once you've had a taste of what's served by the locals, it will be difficult to experience the same burst of flavors when you head back to your local Thai place.

To make sure you visit the places that offer the most delicious and authentic Thai dishes, stay in an accommodation with a central location like S31 Sukhumvit Hotel Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road. Such hotels are surely surrounded by these great hawker joints.

Pa Aew
Located in front of of the Krung Thai Bank near Soi Pratu Nokyung, Pa Aew is a curry stall that offers rich, seafood-heavy dishes that include freshwater fish dumplings with fresh herbs. Don't let the bare-bones and open-air style of this joint fool you because after enjoying a mouthwatering meal, you wouldn't want to leave the plastic stool you're sitting on. A popular specialty you have to try here is the dried “Muslim” curry.

Thip Samai
Home to some of the most legendary fried noodles in town, Thip Samai definitely serves a better version of the pad thai (locally pronounced “pat tai”) compared to those found on the carts along Th Khao San. But if you're already in the vicinity, then there's no need to worry. This restaurant located at 313 Th Mahachai, just a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride from Th Khao San. It's open from 5:30 pm until 1:30 am the next day. Prices range from THB 25 to THB 120.

Jek Pui
A fusion of flavors will greet you at Jek Pui. Enjoy the Chinese-style Thai curries in this table-less stall located along Th Mangkorn Street. Don't miss out on the mild green curry with freshwater fried dumplings. To get here, ride the Tha Ratchawong Ferry to Th Mangkorn or hop on a cab to Hua Lamphong Exit 1.

Somtam Convent
Somtam Convent is a popular restaurant that serves Northeastern-style Thai food such as minced meat salad, som dam, and isan delights. Those who can't wait to try these dishes can take the Sala Daeng Exit 2 from the subway or the Si Lom Exit 2 from the train. Its exact address is at 2/4-5 Th Convent Street. Don't forget to bring THB 30 to THB 100 to enjoy the mouthwatering main dishes served here.

Take a step outside of your Bangkok hotel in Sukhumvit, and visit some of these spots to know how delicious Thai food truly is.
